2017 Minim 'Yandoit' Barbera

2017 Minim 'Yandoit' Barbera

My first release of Barbera from the Glenwillow Vineyard in the Yandoit Hills, coming from 4, short rows at the east end of the top block. These grapes were grown by Peter Ffyfe, planted in rich basaltic soils 21 years ago, and in recent years farmed without the use of systemics. It took some patience watching this fruit ripen…sugars keeps going up, flavours ripening, yet acid stayed through the roof. Apparently Barbera loves growing in the hot, dry and windy Yandoit Hills….its a nice spot.

In the cellar the fruit was all destemmed and fermented in an open pot with plenty of pump overs, drawn out with a little temperature control to a 4 week maceration. Then pressed to barrel on fine lees over winter. Malo trickled through in late Spring and the wine was racked and bottled with a small sulphur add in early February 2018.

Such an interesting grapes variety for me; vicious acid, bright and vivid red fruit and some really soft feathery tannins. This is a wine to drink young, but with all that acid i’m interested to see how it matures in bottle.

Anyway, its a loud one and i hope you dig it.
