A new vineyard and another single site shiraz expression to add to the family. This fruit is grown by Helen and Greg Miles of Colliban Valley vineyard; a site that they planted in 1997 and have farmed without irrigation for most of its life. The site is located at the edge of the harcourt granite, with lenses of clay amongst granitic soil over the occasional bedrock outcrop.

The shiraz from this sight is bright and delicious and retains loads of natural acidity, so i wanted to make something young, light and exploding with fruit, but well structured. In the cellar the fruit was fermented with a mix of destemmed open pot ferments and whole bunch carbonic maceration. Aged in old oak hogs heads for 8 months and racked after malolactic ferment in spring. The wine was carefully settled and bottled without fining or filtration in early February 2018, with a small sulphur addition prior.

Anything but typical of a Heathcote shiraz, but for me a great example of a finer boned and fruitful example of shiraz grown on granite in the cooler Metcalfe Valley.
